New Delhi: Congress leader and Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi will be in Uttar Pradesh’s Raebareli today. His Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra entered Amethi yesterday, to an enthusiastic crowd and support from what was a family bastion and Rahul Gandhi’s seat in Parliament three times in a row since 2004 before defeating him in 2019.The Telegraph reported on Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge underlining Rahul’s “deep connection with Amethi” although, the paper wrote, it’s not clear whether Rahul would be contesting from here this time again. “Amethi was known across the world because of Rahul Gandhi,” Kharge said. “You (voters) have a strong bond with the family (Nehru-Gandhi). Rahul Gandhi loves you and you love him. You will never find such a good person anywhere else.”Amar Ujala notes that Rahul Gandhi had turned up in his former constituency “after 724 days,” but the “entire town turned up to greet him.” His jeep took one and a half hours to traverse the route. Gandhi was aggressive and repeated his support for a caste census. The Hindustan Times cites him as saying, “I ask in every meeting, what is the population of backwards? They are 50% of the population. Dalits are 15% and tribals are 8%. Together, they form 73% of our country. Not a single backward person owns the top 200 companies. In the top management, in media, in the top administration of big hospitals, how many people are from this 73%? Zero. 90 officers run the country. They distribute the budget. Only 3 of these 90 IAS officers and Dalit and Adivasis.”Gandhi said, “Your (backward) people will find their names in the list of workers, MGNREGA. But your attention is being diverted. Sometimes, you will be told to see what’s happening in Pakistan. Sometimes, you will be told ‘Look, China has come’,” Gandhi said.He referred to the consecration function of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, conducted by Modi. “Did you see the Ram Mandir event? It was a grand event. Top business leaders were there, so was Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amitabh Bachchan, and Aishwarya Rai. But did you see any Dalit faces? Our President is a tribal woman, and she wasn’t there. Did you see any farmer or labourer during the event? No backwards were seen during the event,” Gandhi said. The present MP from Amethi, Union minister for women and family welfare Smriti Irani, chose the same day to hold her public outreach programme, the Jan Samvad Vikas Yatra, “at nine places while Rahul’s Yatra stopped at 27 spots, but their paths never crossed,” reports The Telegraph. Irani challenged Rahul Gandhi to contest from his erstwhile constituency of Amethi. “In 2019 he left Amethi, today Amethi has left him. If he is confident, then without going to Wayanad (Mr Gandhi’s Constituency), let him fight from Amethi,” Irani told NDTV.
