New Delhi: The Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday, November 10, wound up their assembly election campaigns for Himachal Pradesh.The Congress held ‘Vijay Ashirwaad’ rallies across all 68 assembly segments of Himachal Pradesh on Thursday, the last day of campaigning ahead of the polls on November 12.The results will be declared on December 8.Party leader Priyanka Gandhi-Vadra, who has been spearheading the campaign in the state, visited several temples to show that the Congress is not opposed to any religion, as being projected by the BJP.In her last rally at Sataun in Sirmaur district, she went door-to-door seeking votes for the party.Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel on Thursday said the Congress will restore the old pension scheme in Himachal Pradesh in 10 days. He added that it will provide one lakh jobs to the people if voted to power.During her campaign over the last month, Gandhi-Vadra hit out at the BJP for its “misgovernance” and “corruption”. She also claimed that the BJP has pushed the state into a debt of Rs 70,000 crore, and that nearly 30 lakh people were unemployed in the state. Congress leader Sachin Pilot and party’s state in-charge Rajeev Shukla have also campaigned in the state.However, senior leaders like Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi have not been able to campaign in the state for the polls.Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on November 9 addressed two rallies in Shimla and Nalagarh in Solan district, where he also said that the party will restore the old pension scheme if voted to power.With its slogan, “Aa rahi hai Congress” (The Congress is coming), it appears that the party is trying hard to keep its flock intact in the state.Separately, several leaders of the BJP, including Union home minister Amit Shah and party president J.P. Nadda, held rallies across the state on the last day.The Wire had reported that the BJP has been linking the elections with issues like security, safety and Hindu pride.Addressing a rally in Palampur on Thursday, Shah said that the BJP will soon roll out the Uniform Civil Code if voted to power in Himachal Pradesh.“Earlier, no one believed that Article 370 could be removed [from Jammu and Kashmir]. And today, Kashmir is an integral part of India,” he said.BJP national president J.P. Nadda addressed a rally in Bilaspur and said that Himachal Pradesh will be recognised on the world map once a ‘Bulk Drug Park’ is established in the state. He added that India is the second largest producer of pharmaceuticals.Over the last month, other party leaders including Union minister Anurag Thakur and Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath have been campaigning in the state.Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not address any rally on the last day of campaigning. However, he had addressed several rallies, including in Sujanpur and Kangra, over the last month.
