Gujarat Elections 2022: 59% Voter Turnout Recorded as Polling in First Phase Ends

The second phase of the elections will be held on December 5 and results will be announced on December 8.

New Delhi: Around 59% of voter turnout was recorded on Thursday, December 1, as polling ended for the first phase of the Gujarat assembly elections at 5 pm.

The earlier voter turn-out figure was provisional as data from some polling stations had not been received and it also did not include postal ballots, the Election Commission said.

According to news agency Press Trust of India, some voters carried cooking gas cylinders to polling stations as a symbol of protest against price rise.

A member of the Maldhari community went to the polling station with a cow and a calf to highlight the plight of his cow-rearing community.

Of the total 182 assembly seats in Gujarat, voting was held in 89 seats across 19 districts of Saurashtra-Kutch and southern regions in the first phase. Voting for the remaining 93 seats will be held on December 5.

Barring a few minor incidents and some reports of problems in the electronic voting machines , the voting process, which commenced at 8 am, remained largely peaceful.

The results will be announced on December 8.
