After chief minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao decided to dissolve the Telangana state assembly months ahead of its scheduled expiry, elections have been scheduled on December 7.
The state is set for a triangular fight. Rao’s Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), which played a crucial role in the state’s formation, is hoping for re-election. The Congress has also tried to stake a claim in the state’s formation and has tied up with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and CPI to try and topple the TRS. The BJP, whose presence has largely been restricted to the capital city of Hyderabad, will try to make inroads in the state.
The Wire takes you through Telangana’s political landscape and the history of the movement that led to its formation.
