New Delhi: The Cockrorach Janta Party (CJP) and Union government held a joint press conference on Saturday (July 25) in which the agitation at Jantar Mantar was called off.“Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan has sent in his resignation, which means that our first demand has been met,” said CJP spokesperson Saurav Das as the press conference began. He said it was being done “in good faith and on the agreed-upon terms”.The second demand, that FIRs should be withdrawn against all the protesters and no new cases should be registered or action initiated against them in the future, has also been accepted, Das said. “The government has said they would be withdrawn and no action would be taken against the organisers either,” he said. The FIRs that have already been filed, he said, would be shared with the CJP within a few days.Das said that a draft of a “guarantee” related to immunity for student-agitators had been shared with the government and he hoped it would be agreed to as-is. The government has assured it would respond to that draft by Tuesday (July 28). The families of students who died by suicide due to the NEET undergraduate paper leak earlier this year have also been assured of compensation. This would be done as per “rules and regulations” for compensation, said Das.On the five-point demand related to examination reforms and reforms in the education sector, the government has asked for four weeks’ time to respond, which the CJP has accepted, Das said.Speaking after the CJP at the press conference, Nadda said, “The demand for no FIRs to be filed and no action to be taken on FIRs that have already been filed have been accepted by the government.” He said in the future as well, they would not face cases related to the protests. He also accepted the compensation-related request of the agitation.“We are also sympathetic to those who are bereaved due to exams and we will give them what is the maximum allowed under the law,” Nadda said.He said the government would “try to do” whatever was possible in consultation with the CJP team.There was no reference to the apology – demanded by the CJP as well as opposition parties – from the security forces for the violence of July 20 during the ‘Sansad Chalo’ march.Education minister resignsEarlier today, Pradhan stepped down from his post in a letter on Saturday afternoon that he posted on social media. What began as an internet movement started by Abhijeet Dipke and the Cockroach Janata Party is now a movement that has brought together students, the youth, their well wishers and opposition parties across the country. Public sentiment has turned even further after the students’ peaceful protest was met with severe brutality from the Delhi Police and RAF on Monday (July 20).The Union government has been in talks with spokespersons from the CJP, who had made clear that Pradhan’s resignation was a non-negotiable. They had also promised a larger and more intense stir across the country if Pradhan did not resign in a day or two. The opposition too had stood by this, saying that while they want a serious discussion around paper leaks and educational matters in parliament, this can be done only after Pradhan’s resignation.
