New Delhi: Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam chief M.K. Stalin has written to President Droupadi Murmu asking for her intervention to initiate impeachment proceedings against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.Relying on the new reports of Indian Express that note how CEC Gyanesh Kumar unilaterally took several decisions on Special Intensive Revision of the electoral rolls in violation of the Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Act, 2023, the principal opposition party in Tamil Nadu has requested the President the refer the matter to the parliament.Highlighting the fact that both the Lok Sabha Speaker and Rajya Sabha Chairman have declined the impeachment motion moved against CEC Gyanesh Kumar by opposition parties “without any reasons” in April this year, DMK has therefore urged the President to “refer the matter to Parliament by sending a message to both Houses under Article 86(2) of the Constitution, requiring them to take into consideration the allegations against Gyanesh Kumar, Chief Election Commissioner of India and take necessary action including under Article 324(5) read with Article 124(4) of the Constitution and Section 11 of the 2023 Act against Thiru Gyanesh Kumar, CEC.”Alleging several irregularities in the ongoing SIR exercise, DMK has also sought for the cancellation of the exercise in entirety in all states and an independent forensic audit of ECINET and ERONET by experts not under the control of Election Commission.Placing on record an analysis by The Hindu BusinessLine titled ‘Did SIR deletions change Tamil Nadu Assembly elections outcome?’, Stalin in his letter to the President has alleged that in recently held assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, “in the 99 constituencies with fewer than 20,000 deletions (through SIR’),TVK won only 24 seats, about one in four but in the 69 constituencies with more than 30,000 deletions, it won 52 seats, more than three in four.”DMK therefore has urged the President “send a reference under Article 143 to the Supreme Court of India to verify and adjudicate the validity of the deletion of 97.37 lakh electors from the electoral rolls of Tamil Nadu during the SIR conducted in 2025.”In his letter, Stalin has also contended that though the party’s Booth Level Agents (BLAs) worked tirelessly to protect the voting rights of the people in the state, because of the centralisation of the electoral rolls through the ERONET portal and by denying access to the EROs, many eligible voters were deleted in the final voter list in the State.DMK has also urged the president to take measures to restore public faith in the electoral process, including the conduct of elections by paper ballot in place of Electronic Voting Machines or EVMs.For our full coverage on the SIR and the issues it has brought to citizens, click here.
