New Delhi: The Lok Sabha on Wednesday (March 11) saw a heated exchange after leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi during the debate on the no-confidence motion against speaker Om Birla, said that the House is the “expression of the people of India, not just one party” and accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of being “compromised”.The treasury benches erupted in protest, with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Ravi Shankar Prasad responding that the prime minister can “never” be compromised.During Prasad’s speech, Gandhi interjected saying his name is being taken multiple times despite the discussion being on the role of the speaker.“The discussion here is about the democratic process and the role of the speaker. My name is being raised multiple times, vile things are being said about me. This House is the expression of the people of India. This House doesn’t represent one party, this House represents the whole country. Every time we get up to speak, we are stopped from speaking,” he said.“The last time I spoke, I raised fundamental questions about the compromises that had been made by our prime minister.”As the treasury benches erupted in protest, Gandhi said that he was stopped from speaking multiple times.“Just a few days ago during a debate for the first time in parliamentary history, the leader of opposition was not allowed to speak. I have been stopped from speaking multiple times. Last time I raised the issue of the prime minister being compromised, [former Army chief General M.M.] Naravane and [child sex offender Jeffrey] Epstein. These issues are fundamental. How our prime minister has been compromised, everybody knows.”Gandhi was referring to his speech during the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address last month when he raised General Naravane’s unreleased memoir that contains a series of revelations, including the former Army chief detailing how he was handed a “hot potato” in dealing with Chinese troop movements in eastern Ladakh in August 2020.Amid disruptions from the treasury benches, Gandhi was stopped from making references to the speech. The Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address was passed without a speech by the leader of opposition and the prime minister.BJP MP Prasad, who was speaking on Wednesday when Gandhi interjected, said Modi can “never be compromised”.“I would like to gently remind the leader of opposition that the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, can never be compromised,” he said.Gandhi’s comments came after Prasad said that the leader of opposition had made remarks against the country abroad and he should be told by his party about parliamentary rules.
