New Delhi: Delhi Police have registered an FIR against Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi and other protesters for allegedly entering the Akashvani Bhavan premises by force during the INDIA bloc’s protest on Tuesday (October 6) against the chief election commissioner (CEC).“I have 45 FIRs against me, my target is 100 FIRs. Every FIR against me is a medal for me,” Rahul told PTI.The FIR comes a day after a sit-in at Akashvani Bhawan that lasted more than eight hours. Rahul and Priyanka were forcefully taken into custody by the Delhi Police later on Tuesday. The employees of Akashvani approached the police with a complaint against Rahul, Priyanka and the other protesters. The protest began after police blocked INDIA bloc MPs who were marching towards the Election Commission (EC)’s office, roughly 300 metres away, to press their “vote chori” allegations and demand the removal of CEC Gyanesh Kumar, following The Indian Express report that pointed to differences within the poll body over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and other matters.Rahul walked into the All India Radio premises on Parliament Street at around noon and joined the demonstrators.Earlier, during the march from parliament to the EC headquarters, Rahul had climbed on top of barricades while opposition MPs shouted “Vote Chor, Gaddi Chhod (vote thief, resign)”.Priyanka, Nationalist Congress Party-SP (NCP-SP) MP Supriya Sule and a number of other opposition leaders were also part of the march. Security forces halted the MPs near the NITI Aayog office, where heavy barricading had been put up around parliament and the EC office. Also read: How Opposition March to EC Became a Day-Long Street Protest and 8-Hour Standoff Led by Rahul GandhiLater, as the protesters were cleared from the AIR premises, police forcibly removed Rahul and several other Congress leaders and MPs. Among them were K.C. Venugopal, Charanjit Singh Channi, Pawan Khera, K. Suresh, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, Deepender Hooda, Praniti Shinde, Varsha Gaekwad and Imran Pratapgarhi. The detained leaders were taken to New Police Lines at Kingsway Camp. According to police, about 250 people, including 50 MPs, were detained on Tuesday night after the sit-in. They were released at around 10 pm.The Hindu reported that the police said the organisers never sought permission for Tuesday’s march from the deputy commissioner of police, New Delhi district, and none was therefore given. They added that restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita were in force across the New Delhi area.Congress MP Imran Masood denied that Gandhi had forced his way in, pointing out that the LoP was with other MPs.“Rahul Gandhi is the LoP and was accompanied by MPs. He did not enter anywhere forcibly,” Masood said.He mentioned that public institutions belong to the country, not to any one party, and accused the authorities of denying the Opposition a chance to meet them.“No one is ready to meet. Now we will go and sit in front of their houses,” he said.Masood added that the FIR would not make the Opposition step back from its agitation.“They should not be mistaken that we will back off fearing an FIR,” he said. For our full coverage on the SIR and the issues it has brought to citizens, click here.
