New Delhi: The Pahalgam terror attack on Tuesday (April 22) in which 26 people, mostly tourists, were killed has been condemned across party lines with some opposition members also urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to call an all-party meeting.Chief minister Omar Abdullah has called an all party meeting on Thursday. In a letter to all major political parties, Abdullah called the attack “a wound upon the very soul of Jammu and Kashmir”.Abdullah said in the letter that the meeting was being called to discuss the situation, express joint condemnation and deliberate on the path to peace.Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s Chhattisgarh X handle posted an AI generated Studio Ghibli image of the victims of the attack with the caption: “Dharm poocha, jaati nahi” (Asked religion, not caste). The post was slammed by opposition leaders who accused the BJP for having “zero sympathy” for those who lost their lives in the attack.Union home minister Amit Shah who reached Pahalgam on Tuesday night, met victims’ families on Wednesday (April 23) and paid respects to the victims of the attack. Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti issued an apology to the country and said that the attack was not only on innocent tourists but also on Kashmiriyat.‘Not only an attack on innocent tourists, it is also an attack on Kashmiriyat’She participated in a march in Srinagar’s Lal Chowk holding posters that read: “This is an attack on all of us”.“The attack that happened yesterday, it is not only an attack on innocent tourists, it is also an attack on Kashmiriyat, we condemn this, it will not be tolerated. The Home Minister is here, he should be finding out the people involved, so that punishment is given as soon as possible,” she said.“People come here to have a good time, it is a cowardly attack, I want to say to the people of the country that we are ashamed, Kashmir is ashamed, we are standing with you in this time of crisis. There should be strict action. I want to apologise to the people of our country.”While addressing a press conference in Bengaluru on Wednesday, Congress president and leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge said that the party “unequivocally condemns this cowardly act of terror and those responsible for it in the strongest possible terms. This attack is a direct assault on the unity and integrity of our nation.”Kharge said that he had spoken to Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah, Union home minister Amit Shah on Wednesday evening and said that this is not the time for “partisan politics” but “collective resolve” to bring the perpetrators to justice.“We also expect the government to hold discussions with all political parties to address the challenge of terrorism in a spirit of consensus once the necessary actions have been taken and full information has been obtained. They should call all-party meeting and take some advice. This is not politics, and we don’t want politics in this situation,” he said.‘Urge the prime minister to urgently call an all-party meeting’Leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi who is on a trip to the US also said that he had spoken with Shah and Abdullah along with the Jammu and Kashmir Congress president Tariq Karra.“The families of victims deserve justice and our fullest support,” he said.NCP-SP MP Supriya Sule called the attack a “cowardly act” and urged the prime minister to call an all-party meeting.“I urge the prime minister to urgently call an all-party meeting in Delhi and let’s address it together, because it is an attack on India, we need answers,” she told PTI.Tamil Nadu Assembly on Wednesday observed two-minutes silence in memory of the victims of the attack. Earlier on Tuesday, Chief minister M.K. Stalin had said that the attack on innocent tourists was “a barbaric act that shocks the conscience. It deserves the strongest condemnation.”West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee also termed the attack a “inhuman act of terror”.While political parties have condemned the attack, there have also been calls for the Modi government to fix accountability.“Terrorists killed innocent people after asking their religion in Pahalgam. We strongly condemn this incident. We hope that the government will teach a lesson to these terrorists. We are standing in solidarity with the affected families and pray that those injured get well soon,” said AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi.“Secondly, this is also an intelligence failure, and the Narendra Modi government should recheck its deterrence policy. This incident is more condemnable than Uri and Pulwama because these terrorists, who have come from the neigbouring country, have targeted civilians, tourists. We demand the Modi government to fix accountability.”On Tuesday evening, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut demanded Shah’s resignation and accused him of spending time “toppling governments”.“Amit Shah is a failed home minister in the history of the country. The entire country is seeking his resignation. BJP is not close to anyone except its own power. Highly condemnable!”Yadav said that if the BJP government had learnt from previous terror attacks, it would have been on alert and lives could have been saved.“It is a request to the insensitive BJP members that after understanding the pain of the families who have lost their loved ones, at least the security of the country should not be made a mere slogan. This is a time of immense sorrow, the BJP should not commit the misdeed of denying it with ostentatious meetings and false sentiments.”
