New Delhi: The Congress on Thursday (June 11) accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of “seat chori” (theft) and said that it is easier for the saffron party to fix elections than win them. The opposition party also announced that it will fight against the cancellation of its Rajya Sabha candidate Meenakshi Natarajan’s nomination from Madhya Pradesh, politically and legally. The Congress’ statement came after an organisational meeting was held in New Delhi, of the party’s top leaders, even as the three BJP Rajya Sabha candidates in Madhya Pradesh were elected unopposed.The three BJP candidates who were elected include, national general secretary Tarun Chugh, state secretary Rajneesh Agrawal and former State Fisherman Welfare Board chairman Mahesh Kewat. In a post on X, BJP Madhya Pradesh said that all three candidates had received their certificates. Venugopal said that the issue was discussed in detail.“The latest situation, which happened in Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand, is a cause of the greatest worry for democracy. The issues in Madhya Pradesh on rejecting the nomination of Meenakshi Natarajan. The reason is that she didn’t disclose a notice sent by a court. There was no criminal case, FIR, or charge sheet against her. And citing that reason, Meenakshi Natarajan’s nomination was rejected,” said Venugopal. “On the other hand, the nomination of a BJP-sponsored corporate candidate, who didn’t even mention his name properly in the column, was accepted by the Returning Officer in Jharkhand. This shows the pathetic condition of democracy… Today’s meeting discussed this issue in detail and we will fight out this issue politically and legally.” he added. Venugopal and Gandhi were referring to Nathwani who is director, corporate affairs at Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) and is the National Democratic Alliance-backed (NDA-backed) Independent Rajya Sabha candidate in Jharkhand. The returning officer had on Wednesday cleared his nomination paving the way for him to contest the June 18 elections.Nathwani has been an independent Rajya Sabha MP from Jharkhand for two consecutive terms between 2008 and 2020 and is seeking another term with the support of the NDA.While Natarajan had moved the Supreme Court on Thursday challenging the rejection of her Rajya Sabha candidature, the court has listed the petition for hearing on Friday. Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi had requested for an urgent hearing either today or tomorrow, LiveLaw reported, and said that today was the last day of withdrawing nominations, and an order be passed to restrain the declaration of results.
