New Delhi: Union minister Chirag Paswan said on Friday (October 9) that nothing can “stop” the youth of India as police across the country detained protesters and metro and rail services were curtailed in the national capital ahead of the October 10 protest in Jantar Mantar against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.“These are the youth of India, nothing can stop them. To those attempting to spread such misconceptions, I ask: how many trains can anyone really stop? How much connectivity can be blocked? How many roads can be jammed? These are India’s youth; they possess the capacity to show the world the way, just as previous generations have done, and so, nothing can hold them back,” Union Minister of Food Processing Industries Paswan was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.Internet services will remain temporarily suspended from 10 pm on October 9 to 10 pm on October 10 at and around a radius of 4 km from Japath-Kartavya Path crossing.In an unprecedented move, the Indian Railways has also cancelled all trains arriving at and departing from New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin stations for ten hours between 4 am and 2 pm on Saturday.Earlier on Friday, the Delhi police wrote to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) asking them to consider closing entry and exit gates at 57 Metro stations in Delhi from Friday night itself.Also read: The SIR Was an Attempt at Creating a Techno-Fascist State. Will the CEC’s Resignation End This Attempt?The 57 stations which will be closed include Janpath, Patel Chowk, Central Secretariat, Rajiv Chowk, New Delhi, Mandi House, ITO, Delhi Gate, Khan Market, Supreme Court, Indraprastha, INA, Hauz Khas, Lajpat Nagar, Kashmere Gate, Karol Bagh, Jama Masjid, Vishwavidyalaya, Seelampur, Shahdara and Rohini West.Other stations also include Lok Kalyan Marg, Jor Bagh, Jangpura, Ashram, Jamia Millia Islamia, Okhla Vihar, Civil Lines, GTB Nagar, Adarsh Nagar, Jahangir Puri, Welcome, Yamuna Vihar, Rithala and the INA station on both metro lines.In a press conference, the Delhi police announced on Friday that they have denied permission to the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) to hold its planned protest on Saturday against CEC Gyanesh Kumar at Jantar Mantar. However, protesters and youth across the country seem to be determined to go ahead with the planned protest.Meanwhile, the Supreme Court today said that there should not be a complete shutdown of Delhi metro trains or roads on October 10, but it is unclear if its orders will bring relief to protesters and non-protesters who are likely to be affected by the shutdown of 57 Metro stations and other drastic measures brought by the Delhi Police.For our full coverage on the SIR and the issues it has brought to citizens, click here.
