New Delhi: Former Bharatiya Janata Party MP and Wrestling Federation of India’s (WFI) ex-president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has been named to the BJP’s Uttar Pradesh state executive committee, three months after he was acquitted in a sexual harassment case lodged by a group of women wrestlers, The Indian Express reported. This comes three years after six women wrestlers accused him of sexual harassment. Following his acquittal in the case, there were specualations that the strongman would return to active politics in western UP.According to the daily, this is the first time Singh has been included in the top panel. The committee was created by UP BJP president Pankaj Chaudhary on October 26 ahead of its meeting scheduled on Friday (October 30) to draw up a plan for upcoming assembly elections in the state.Union home minister Amit Shah will address the opening session of the day-long meeting to be held in Lucknow and Chief minister Adityanath will address the concluding session, as decided during the office-bearers meeting on Thursday.Six other BJP leaders from Gonda district are also in the state executive.Despite being a six-time MP, Singh has not been given any position in the party’s national or the state unit in the past. However, with his acquittal, he is legally in the clear to participate in BJP programmes.Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, in light of the sexual harassment allegations by female wrestlers, Singh was dropped from the candidates list, while his son Karan Bhushan Singh in the Kaiserganj Lok Sabha seat was given a ticket from Kaiserganj, one of the constituencies Brij Bhushan has represented in the past. The former WFI chief had, at the time, told voters outside Kaiserganj, that Karan’s victory would be “a slap in the face” of those trying to “end his political career”.Women wrestlers had made serious complaints against the BJP MP, including that he demanded sexual favours in lieu of professional assistance, molested them, ran his hands over their breasts and intimidated anyone who tried to complain. Wrestlers, including world champion Vinesh Phogat and Olympic medalist Sakshi Malik, held a long protest against him, the Union government and the police’s failure to act and even gave up their international and national awards. The police had cracked down on the protest.A close aide of Brij Bhushan has told Express the former MP will be in the fray in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. “He will certainly contest the 2029 election. The final decision rests with the BJP central leadership. Politically, his position has become stronger after the acquittal. Everyone in the BJP believed he was innocent. We were only waiting for the court’s verdict,” he said, as quoted by the daily.
