New Delhi: The Punjab Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unit is imploding, riven with internal dissensions. The unease is now public, ever since the organisational rejig and longstanding BJP workers feeling sidelined as newcomers are seen to being rewarded with key organisational positions while long-serving party workers are being overlooked.There is confusion over the party’s bid to again forge an alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini (often spotted in turbans leading the BJP’s political outreach in neighbouring Punjab) has again stepped in and “ruled out any possibility of an alliance” with SAD in the state. Talking to media, Haryana CM Saini said that the alliance of the BJP “is with the people of Punjab”.He claimed that the BJP is forming the next government in the state. Newspapers have cited sources and say that the BJP’s high command, in order to quell, growing dissent has deputed party observer and Rajya Sabha MP Satish Poonia to meet the disgruntled leaders and make an assessment of the state organisation’s functioning. Poonia, is also the party’s Haryana in-charge. He has been asked to submit a report on the grievances and recommend measures.When quizzed over the SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal meeting prime minister Narendra Modi late last week, Saini said Modi “represents 140 crore people of India and could meet anyone.”BJP’s politics in almost all states but now especially in Punjab, has rested on leaders from rival parties being pulled in, the old cadre is resentful, feeling “they are being forced to share political space at the expense of their own contributions”, as The New Indian Express reported a week ago.There is trouble over the present leadership being unmindful of concerns or feedback. The Indian Express reported last week that leaders say organisational secretary Manthri Srinivasulu and state chief Kewal Singh Dhillon are “inaccessible”. ‘Outsider’ Dhillon took over as Punjab BJP president, in May, but after a controversial organisational reshuffle was carried out by him on July 18, there is “a public rebellion within the party.”Many district presidents, including Maninder Singh Kapial (Sangrur-1), Gaurav Kakkar (Faridkot), Satish Thakur Bawa (Hoshiarpur Urban), Yogesh Sapra (Hoshiarpur Rural) and Satish Asija (Muktsar) were appointed that day. But just a fortnight later, on August 2, all five were replaced without any explanation, intensifying anger.BJP also announced a new state team on the same day comprising 12 vice-presidents, 12 secretaries, five general secretaries and a few more office-bearers. Anuj Khosla was named the state president of the Punjab BJP Yuva Morcha. Khosla had defected from the Congress to BJP three years ago. Three of the five general secretaries are from Ludhiana and many in the party feel that party’s relative strongholds of Majha and Doaba have been completely overlooked.Amid trouble over dissent, the new state president of the BJP in Punjab dramatically cut short his meeting in the state and went to meet national president Nitin Nabin on August 9, just days after Nabin himself was hit by the stunning loss of his own seat and family bastion in Bankipur in Bihar.
