New Delhi: After the Congress defeated the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the crucial assembly by-election in Datia – a seat that was considered as a stronghold of the saffron party – the BJP on Tuesday (August 4) dissolved its entire Datia district organisation, reported Indian Express.The party’s decision to dissolve its district organisation once again points to the divisions within the Madhya Pradesh BJP. Earlier, after six-time MLA and the state’s former home minister Narottam Mishra was denied a ticket from the seat and was subsequently replaced with Ashutosh Tiwari, Datia had seen clashes between the BJP and Mishra’s supporters.The entire existing organisational structure of the BJP in Datia, including district president, district office-bearers, district executive, mandal committees, morchas, cells, projects, departments and all other organisational units have been dissolved and the office bearers relieved from their responsibilities.The district organisation has been dissolved following the directions of state BJP president Hemant Khandelwal, for whom the Datia by-election was the first test after taking charge as the state chief.Meanwhile, a video of BJP candidate Tiwari, who lost the by-election by more than 6,000 votes to the Congress’s Ghanshyam Singh, is being widely circulated on social media, wherein he is heard saying, “I am not going to say that main jhola leke aya tha, jhola lekar chala jaunga (I am not going to say that I came with a bag, will pick up my bag and leave). I have come with a jhola and stay here.”The reference to “jhola (bag)” here is important as it is similar to prime minister Narendra Modi’s famous dialogue, “Arre mera kya bigad lenge ji. Main to fakeer hun jhola utha ke chal padunga (I am an ascetic, I will pick up my bag and leave).”Complaints against party leaders to be sent to BJP central leadershipIndian express reported citing unnamed sources that complaints against Datia district president Raghuvir Kushwah and several office-bearers would be compiled and sent to the central leadership.The party’s internal reports have also highlighted allegations that more than a dozen BJP councillors worked against the official candidate during the campaign, the newspaper reported.Before the Datia district unit was dissolved, chief minister Mohan Yadav chaired a high-level review meeting at his official residence which was attended by state BJP president Khandelwal, deputy chief minister Jagdish Devda, ministers, senior office-bearers and leaders who had managed the Datia campaign.Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav thanked Madhya Pradesh state Congress president Jitu Patwari who had said that the credit for the bypoll win in Datia should go to Yadav as well.The bypoll was necessitated after the sitting Congress MLA, Rajendra Bharti, was disqualified upon being convicted in a criminal case in April. However, in a surprise move, the BJP declared that its candidate for the bypoll would be Tiwari and not Mishra.This did not go down well with Mishra’s supporters, who expected him to be fielded from the constituency he won thrice in the past. They had not only staged a disruptive protest bringing traffic to a standstill, the district president of Datia along with his supporters and several other office-bearers had resigned from their posts in support of Mishra. They even threatened to quit the primary membership of the BJP if the decision to field Tiwari was not reversed.
