New Delhi: The Samrat Choudhary government, Bihar’s first Bharatiya Janata Party-led dispensation, came under mounting pressure from the opposition and a key ally on Friday, September 25, after the photograph of a minor girl, who was molested earlier this week in Jamui district, was released from the official X handle of the chief minister. The victim and her parents had gone to Choudhary’s official residence in Patna where the photograph was taken.The photo, according to The Hindu, remained on X for over 15 minutes before it was deleted after officials realised that the victim had been identified. Within the short span, the image had been downloaded and circulated across social media multiple times. The police registered a first information report at the Secretariat police station against Sagar Prasad, an official posted at the Chief Minister’s Office, in this connection.Six persons have been apprehended in relation to the Jamui incident, three of whom, according to the police, are reportedly minors.Over the past week, two separate incidents of sexual assault involving a minor and a young woman have surfaced from Bihar and made their rounds on social media. The police have registered a case against three individuals in connection with the second case after a video, purportedly showing a woman being harassed at Mandar Hills, a popular tourist destination in Banka, Bihar, appeared on social media. Though the video carries a September 3 time stamp, the police claim it was shot in June. According to Banka Police, the victim had visited Mandar Hills with two friends, where the three accused allegedly abused and threatened her. One of them reportedly forced the victim’s friend to transfer Rs 1,500 to his bank account before allowing them to leave. On Friday (September 25), a third video showing a woman being harassed by a group of men started circulating on social media. The incident has attracted ire from both the opposition as well as National Democratic Alliance (NDA) allies. Union food processing minister and key NDA-ally Chirag Paswan called out the Bihar government over the deplorable law and order situation in the state. “The incidents that keep coming to light involving young women are a matter of extremely serious concern and are undoubtedly shameful as well. For me, it is a matter of extreme concern that criminals are daring to carry out such incidents even under our government’s watch,” Paswan told reporters in Patna.This is not the first time Choudhary has been criticised for his handling of incidents related to sexual assaults. Earlier this week, Choudhary even claimed that the accused “would not have been arrested had they not uploaded reels of the assault on the minor girl”.On September 22, police shot one of the main accused in the Jamui incident in the leg in what has been described as an “encounter”.Paswan, while speaking to reporters, added that mere arrests or encounters would not be enough to prevent such incidents. “Accountability must also be fixed for those officials in whose presence such shameful events take place and who fail to prevent them,” he said.
