New Delhi: Civil society organisations have appealed to the President, Election Commission, police, armed forces, Supreme Court and heads of other key institutions to be vigilant in the days to come in the wake of the counting of votes on June 4.In a resolution, called ‘Delhi Resolution’, passed on May 28, various organisations and civil society members have expressed concern over possible efforts by political parties to subvert a free and fair counting process, thereby undermining the mandate of people. They say their fear stems from “unprecedented violations of the constitution” and Model Code of Conduct by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the run-up to the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. “There is genuine apprehension and fear that these levels of structured manipulations will continue both during the counting process and thereafter, failing to respect the mandate of the people,” the resolution said. They urged election officials, police, armed forces and other government authorities to stand by the people instead of being partisan. They also appealed to President Droupadi Murmu to ensure a smooth formation of government based on a free and fair result. To avert any crisis, civil society organisations in their capacity have formed a Vigilant Voter Task Force and Transition Watch Commission. The former will closely monitor the counting process, particularly in 225 to 250 “sensitive” constituencies. The latter will hold multiple press conferences to appraise the national and international media of any possible violations during the counting process and transition to a new government. It will also, if necessitated, approach the Supreme Court to ensure that the people’s mandate prevails.
