New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday launched the USD 4.2 million redevelopment project of the 200-year-old Lord Sri Krishna temple in the Bahraini capital.Modi offered prayers at the Shreenathji Temple in Manama, the oldest temple in the region on Saturday. Prime Minister then unveiled the plaque, launching the redevelopment project of the temple.The facelift for the Shreenathji (Shree Krishna) temple in Manama will kick off later this year.Thank you Bahrain for the warmth and affection. The temple reflects the pluralism of Bahraini society. pic.twitter.com/no1fei2UPs— Raveesh Kumar (@MEAIndia) August 25, 2019The USD 4.2 million redevelopment project will be on a piece of land measuring 16,500 square feet and the new four-floor structure covering 45,000 square feet will have an overall height of 30 meters.The heritage and the 200-year-old legacy of the temple will be highlighted in the redevelopment and the new iconic complex will house the sanctum sanctorum and prayer halls. There are also facilities for traditional Hindu marriage ceremonies and other rituals, promoting Bahrain as a wedding destination and boosting tourism.On Saturday, PM Modi was honoured with “The King Hamad Order of the Renaissance” as he held talks with King of Bahrain Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa on various bilateral and regional issues.Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Bahrain is significant as it is the first visit of an Indian Prime Minister to the country.“Ties built on deep civilizational linkages. This is a symbol of the close and friendly relations between the Kingdom of Bahrain and India,” he added, as he expressed his gratitude for this “unique gesture”.Modi is on the third leg of his three-nation tour to France, the UAE and Bahrain.Modi arrived here after wrapping up his visit to the UAE where he held talks with the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and discussed measures to improve trade and cultural ties between the two countries.Modi was also honoured with the ‘Order of Zayed’, the UAE’s highest civilian award, as a mark of appreciation for his efforts to boost bilateral ties between the two nations.From Bahrain, Modi is scheduled to return to France on Sunday to attend the G7 Summit meeting.(With inputs from PTI)
