New Delhi: The Wrestling Federation of India elections, promised by the Union government to the protesting wrestlers, have been delayed by five days and will now be held on July 11. This decision was taken by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA)-nominated committee, according to The Indian Express, because of disputes within state bodies whose members vote in these elections. The last day to send entries for the electoral college has also been extended from June 21 to midnight of June 25.Some have reportedly objected to family members of current WFI president and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh – who is facing sexual harassment allegations from multiple women wrestlers – being allowed to vote, saying they were illegally appointed’ to the state association. The three member ad hoc IOA-appointed committee was approached by disaffiliated state bodies in Maharashtra, Haryana, Telangana, Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh, The Indian Express reported. They alleged that they have been wrongly disaffiliated by the WFI under Singh.“We received complaints from at least 10 state bodies over a variety of issues. Most complaints pertained to affiliation; some bodies said they have been sidelined, some claimed they are the ones recognised by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). We needed more time to study their cases and decide. We want the elections to be completely fair and not draw any criticism from UWW,” committee chairperson Bhupender Singh Bajwa told Hindustan Times.“Everyone was in agreement that the elections should be non-controversial and fair. We decided to hear everyone out and then decide,” Bajwa added.Objections have also been raised over the inclusion of Brij Bhushan’s son-in-law Vishal Singh in the voters’ list, The Indian Express reported. Vishal is the president of the Bihar Wrestling Association.
