New Delhi: Defence expert, author and commentator Maroof Raza passed away at the age of 67 on Thursday, February 26. A retired Indian Army officer, he had extensive experience in counter-insurgency operations.Raza was a prominent face in media circles. He had also served as Times Now’s Consulting Editor on matters of strategic affairs. Several media persons have reacted to the news of his demise.In a post on X, Rajdeep Sardesai said, “Very sad news: Major Maroof Raza has passed away.. many TV viewers will remember Maroof and his distinctive style and knowledge on defence issues. . RIP”NDTV’s Vishnu Som wrote, “He was NDTV’s first defence correspondent and a close friend and colleague. Will miss him. Always encouraged me to push myself and excel – generous with his praise, kind in his actions. A lovely, lovely human being. Back in the day, Maroof, Surya Gangadharan and I worked closely together.”Raza was an alumnus and former school captain (Batch of 1975) of the Mayo College in Ajmer, Rajasthan.In a statement on his passing, Mayo College Old Boys’ Society, “We deeply mourn the passing of Maroof Raza (School Captain, Batch of 1975), a proud alumnus whose life was marked by service, scholarship, and leadership.”“A retired Indian Army officer with extensive experience in counter-insurgency operations, he went on to become a respected strategic affairs expert, author, and commentator,” it read.The statement goes on to highlight his Times of India Fellowship, visiting fellowships at leading global institutions, his academic and professional contributions that enriched national security discourse. “The Mayo College community remembers him with great respect and gratitude. Our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of Mayoites,” the statement read.
