New Delhi: The Delhi high court has rejected a public interest litigation that sought the blocking of an article published by The Print, on the closure of R&AW offices in North America after the diplomatic row over the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar and alleged plot to kill Gurpatwant Singh Pannun.Bar and Bench reports that the division bench of Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora rejected the petitioner’s contention that the article was damaging the careers of Indian diplomats and putting their lives at risk.“It is an innocuous piece. Leave it at that. It does not identify anyone. I think you [the petitioner] have identified more people than that. Your source is correct or not we have no idea,” the bench said. This is freedom of press, we cannot order it to be removed like this, the bench reportedly continued.“Government of India has full power and authority to block any article which compromises national safety and security and it requires no advise of either the petitioner or this court… The Court should not easily transgress into this area. The impugned article, in the opinion of this court, prima facie, does not compromise the careers of the officers or puts the life of their family members in any danger,” the order stated. The Print‘s article, by Praveen Swami, cited intelligence sources to say that two senior Research and Analysis Wing officers were asked to leave their stations in major Western cities in the summer of 2023 because of the agency’s alleged role in Nijjar’s assassination and a plot to kill Pannun. “RAW was also blocked from replacing its station head in Washington, DC, it is learnt,” the report claimed. “These actions were part of a series of moves intended to signal anger against what the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom saw as violations of the unwritten conventions which govern the operations of RAW in those countries.”
