New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday questioned the veracity of video transcripts submitted by the Union government against climate activist Sonam Wangchuk and said that precision was of utmost importance in the era of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing on behalf of Wangchuk’s wife Gitanjali Angmo, argued that certain statements attributed to the Ladakhi activist were not made by him. The court then directed the Union government to present actual transcripts of Wangchuk’s speeches. The matter was being heard by a bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and P.B. Varale “Mr Solicitor, we want an actual transcript of the speech. What he relied upon and what you say are different. We will decide. There should be an actual transcript of what he says. At least, whatever he stated, the true translation should be there. Your translation goes on for 7 to 8 minutes, but the speech is for 3 minutes. We are in the era of Artificial Intelligence; precision is at least 98% for translation, the bench said.Sibal argued that the Union government had passed orders for Wangchuk’s detention on the basis of lines that he never said. “Wangchuk continued his strike and also continued to provoke youth by taking reference of Nepal. Where is this line coming from? This is a very unique detention order – you rely on something that does not exist and then you say it is based on subjective satisfaction,” Sibal said. Additional Solicitor General KM Nataraj responded that a separate department was responsible for preparing transcripts. “We are not experts in it,” he said. The matter will now be heard again on Thursday, the Times of India reported. Farmer body seeks Wangchuk’s releaseThe Shetkari Sanghatana, a farmers’ organisation in Maharashtra’s Miraj, passed a resolution seeking the climate activist’s release and condemned his arbitrary and unlawful detention. The body will also put up hoardings in several villages seeking his release, the Hindu reported.“The government is ungrateful and wrong. The BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) had itself promised in its 2019 manifesto that it would provide separate Statehood to Ladakh as well. Sonam Wangchuk was only demanding something that was already promised. We appeal to the BJP that the government should release him immediately. We also appeal that all social organisations should come together to seek the release of Sonam Wangchuk,” Kalidas Apet, working president of the Shetkari Sanghatana, told the paper.Apet also spoke of Wangchuk’s contribution to furthering education in Ladakh and his endeavours in scientific innovation. “He is a man who built solar powered tents for our jawans. He is himself the son of a soldier. He has taken such good care of our soldiers of the Indian Army. To call such a man a traitor is not just being ungrateful, but also agitating. His only demand is that the government should keep its promise,” Apet said.BackgroundWangchuk was detained on September 26, 2025 under the National Security Act (NSA) after protests in Leh, Ladakh over demands for statehood and constitutional safeguards turned violent. Four people were killed and dozens were injured during clashes between protesters and security forces. Wangchuk is known internationally for his innovative work in education and climate change campaigns. His detention has drawn attention from human rights organisations worldwide, who have called for a review of the circumstances leading to his arrest. In the last hearing on February 11, the Union government had told the court that Wangchuk was in stable health, in response to a plea filed by Angmo, seeking her husband’s release. Government representatives argued that Wangchuk’s health does not warrant special treatment and that the reasons for his detention were still valid. They urged the court not to consider health grounds for his early release.
