New Delhi: The Supreme Court has ordered five states – Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan – to file affidavits within one week detailing steps they have taken to curb air pollution.The court noted that air pollution is continuing in the Delhi region despite steps taken by the Commission for Air Quality Management.“The states concerned should file an affidavit setting forth what steps they have taken to redeem the position. We call upon the states of Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan to file an affidavit within a week,” the bench of Justices S.K. Kaul, Sudhanshu Dhulia and P.K. Mishra said, according to The Tribune.On the same day, the Bombay high court took suo motu cognisance of the rising air pollution in Mumbai and its suburbs. “We are taking suo motu cognisance of the AQI. Every day AQI is deteriorating in every area. Not a single area is remaining in Mumbai. We will issue notice and seek reply and then we will look at other Municipal corporations,” a bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Arif Doctor said, according to Bar and Bench.The bench sought responses from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, Maharashtra Pollution Control Board and Central Pollution Control Board on the steps taken by them to tackle the issue.
