New Delhi: A day after Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) co-conveners Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were released from their judicial custody in Tihar Jail, the Delhi Police Crime Branch summoned them on Thursday (October 22), along with their associate Ajinkya Shinde, to join the investigation into the protest at Jantar Mantar.Das and Ranka, however, did not appear for questioning and have reportedly asked for more time. According to news agency ANI, police are expected to serve a fresh notice on Das and Ranka. The three were asked to appear before the Crime Branch at its office in Rajouri Garden at 12 noon in connection with two cases transferred to the crime branch on Monday and Tuesday, respectively. The duo was released on Wednesday after a Special Executive Magistrate (SEM) court accepted their personal and surety bonds and recorded their written undertakings to maintain peace and abide by the law regarding protest at Jantar Mantar. The Delhi Police had sought their further judicial custody for three days. What are the two cases? The first case, filed on Monday based on a complaint by representatives of the Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) office at Jantar Mantar protest site at Connaught Place police station, was related to sections of ‘disobedience of an order given by a public servant, house trespass, and criminal conspiracy’.The second case, registered at the Parliament Street police station, was for ‘trespassing’ through private premises, despite the Jantar Mantar having been de-notified as a designated protest venue. On Tuesday, the CJP had approached the Delhi high court for listing its petition seeking the release of Das and Ranka from judicial custody, citing prolonged detention despite having submitted sureties, and that the powers exercised by the SEM were “arbitrary”. The petition was eventually withdrawn on the high court’s suggestion.Meanwhile, Delhi high court was also hearing All India Students’ Association (AISA) national president Neha Bora’s petition against police notice asking her to execute a “peace bond” before a special executive magistrate, and will pass an order on the same on Friday.Justice Subramonium Prasad, after hearing the counsel for Bora and police for nearly three hours, reserved the order on the petition. “I will pass order tomorrow 6 PM,” the judge said.
