New Delhi: While hearing Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal’s pleas for bail in a money laundering case related to the alleged Delhi liquor policy scam today (May 30), Delhi’s Rouse Avenue court issued notices to the Enforcement Directorate (ED).Special judge Kaveri Baweja listed Kejriwal’s plea for regular bail in the case to be heard on June 7 after the ED sought time beyond June 1 to respond, PTI reported. Its report added that Baweja gave the agency time till June 1 to respond to the notice on Kejriwal’s plea for interim bail in the case.Kejriwal is seeking interim bail till June 9 – an extension of a week past the expiration of his current interim bail term on June 2, granted by the Supreme Court earlier this month – on medical grounds, saying he needs more time to undergo medical tests. When he approached the Supreme Court for the extension in his interim bail, the court declined to list it in its register yesterday, saying it had given him liberty to apply the trial court for regular bail in the case when it reserved its verdict. He then approached the Rouse Avenue court today.Legal news site Bar and Bench noted that this marks the first time Kejriwal pleaded for bail in this case, having previously only challenged his arrest and subsequent remand by the ED, which is a Union government financial crimes agency. The ED arrested Kejriwal on March 21 and has since alleged him of being the “kingpin” in the alleged Delhi liquor policy scam. His Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Delhi is accused of granting liquor licenses to certain traders in exchange for bribes under a now-scrapped liquor policy first implemented in 2021.On May 10, the apex court granted interim bail to Kejriwal until June 2 – meaning he could campaign for elections in Delhi and Punjab, both of which have AAP governments and which were scheduled to vote on May 25 and June 1 respectively – but prohibited him from discharging his chief-ministerial duties while out.
