New Delhi: The Bombay high court on Tuesday criticised Bharatiya Janata Party leaders’ comments slamming actor Dia Mirza’s video against firecrackers posted by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) ahead of Diwali. The court said that it was “disturbed by the stray comments made by some politicians” after BJP leaders criticised Mirza’s Diwali awareness campaign and directed the BMC to reupload the video, LiveLaw reported.A division bench of Justice Girish Kulkarni and Justice Dr Neela Gokhale were hearing the matter, the report said. The controversyMirza had created a video urging people not to burst firecrackers on Diwali at the BMC’s request. The video was then posted on the BMC’s social media page, following which BJP leaders objected to the post and called Mirza ‘anti-Hindu’. BMC later took down the post.According to LiveLaw, the Bombay high court hailed Mirza’s message and called the objections “really unfortunate” and said that India was a secular country.Citing the court’s own order on participation in the awareness campaign, the court held that Mirza had acted in accordance with its directions and questioned the “angle” of objections taken by the politicians, LiveLaw reported.Justice Gokhale said the matter was purely an environmental issue. “Everyone is breathing the same air, be it anyone. It’s not that barring firecrackers is taking away your right to celebrate the festival,” she said, adding that the BMC’s “knee-jerk reaction” was not necessary. The court also said that the objections came from only a few people and could be avoided. “When we are speaking about health and pollution and environment…There is no room for factionalism,” the court said, adding that “This balance ought not to be disturbed by any loose comment,” the Bench said. BJP leaders’ commentsMumbai BJP President and MLA Ameet Satam, and Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde were among those who criticised Mirza’s video. Tawde accused Mirza of taking an “anti-Hindu” and “anti-Hindutva” stand, saying the Hindus did not need actors to teach them about Diwali.Maharashtra Minister Nitesh Rane also asked why Mirza did not make similar posts about Eid, Muharram or Bakri Eid and chose to advocate only for an environment-friendly Diwali.Shiv Sena spokesperson Shaina NC also criticised Mirza’s video, the report said.
