Maharashtra BJP MLA Ganpat Gaikwad Arrested For Firing at Shiv Sena Leader Inside Police Station

The Kalyan MLA shot at Mahesh Gaikwad, Kalyan city president of the Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction), over an alleged property dispute.

New Delhi: Ganpat Gaikwad, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Maharashtra’s Kalyan East, has been arrested, along with two others, after the lawmaker allegedly fired at Mahesh Gaikwad, Kalyan city president of the Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction), inside a police station in Thane on Friday night.

“Ganpat Gaikwad and Harshal Nana Kene from Kalyan West first fired on Mahesh and Rahul Patil inside the cabin of the senior inspector of Hill Line police station in Ulhasnagar,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 4-Thane) Sudhakar Pathare was quoted as saying to The Indian Express.

“Sandeep Anant Sarvankar and other associates were also booked as they were supporting Ganpat. Sarvankar has been arrested along with Ganpat and Kene. We are looking for three more accused.”

Prior to his arrest, Ganpat Gaikwad, while speaking to a Marathi news channel, said that he fired at Mahesh Gaikwad as his son was being beaten at the police station and that he has no regrets.

“Yes, I shot (him) myself. I have no regrets. If my son is being beaten in front of the police inside the police station, what will I do,” asked Ganpat Gaikwad while talking to a news channel. He claimed that he fired five rounds.

He added that Eknath Shinde is attempting to “create a kingdom of criminals” in Maharashtra.

However, Datta Shinde, Thane Additional CP, said that the incident took place last night when they had come to the police station in connection with a property dispute and there was no question of self-defence.

“Those who had come to the police station included Vaibhav Gaikwad, his father and MLA Ganpat Gaikwad and Mahesh Gaikwad. There was a loud conversation happening outside so the PI came outside to try and make people understand. During that time the firing took place inside the station. MLA Gaikwad shot Mahesh Gaikwad and Rahul Patil,” he told ANI.

Shinde added that a case has been registered and there was no question of self-defence or provocation behind the firing.

“There was no question of (firing in) self-defence. The injured were sitting and watching the CCTV screen. There was no argument or provocation. But he (Ganpat Gaikwad) got up and shot at them. A total of ten bullets have been fired and six bullets have been taken out from Mahesh Gaikwad, Patil has also been injured,” he added.

Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray faction) spokesperson Anand Dubey said that the incident shows how Maharashtra is turning into “jungle raj.”

“The firing incident happened inside a police station. BJP MLA Ganpat Gaikwad fired at the leader of Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena leader. Just imagine, how our state Maharashtra is being turned into a jungle raj. How unfortunate is that a MLA who is responsible for making people’s lives better is firing and who is he firing at, at someone who is part of the government. Which direction is our state going in?” he said in a video statement.
