New Delhi: Delhi advocate Manik Gupta has now approached the Supreme Court, alleging that he was assaulted and abused by the Delhi Police when he visited the Nizamuddin Police Station on Thursday (July 23) for the release of students who were arbitrarily picked up on their way to Jantar Mantar to participate in the ongoing Cockroach Janata Party-led (CJP-led) student protests.Earlier, Gupta told The Wire that he was slapped, punched and illegally detained by officers at the Nizamuddin Police Station when he went there to help detained students on the intervening night of July 23-24. The police, on the other hand, denied the allegations of assault.Gupta wrote a complaint to the deputy commissioner of police (DCP), South-East District, on July 24, detailing his account of custodial violence. Gupta told The Wire that he did not receive any reply from the DCP or any other police officer.Also read: Hospital Record Confirms Gunshot Injury, Protester Says Security Forces Shot at Her on July 20In an application filed before the Supreme Court, Gupta urged the top court to order an independent probe into the incident.The application has been impleaded in the writ petition Shailendra Mani Tripathi v. Union of India, relating to the police action against student protesters.In the application filed before the Supreme Court, it reads: “On 23.07.2026, at around 11:30 p.m., the Applicant received several distress calls informing him that certain students had been detained by the police while crossing the Nizamuddin intersection. Pursuant thereto, the Applicant proceeded alone to Police Station Nizamuddin at around 12:00 midnight to enquire as to the reason for the students’ detention. Present at the police station at that time were an eminent Professor of Sociology from the University of Delhi and a senior journalist who is the founder of a news agency, both of whom are willing to testify on affidavit to the conduct of the Applicant, should this Hon’ble Court so require. The Applicant was thereafter himself detained by the police and subjected to custodial violence, in respect whereof a complaint has been filed with the Commissioner of Police, Delhi, and the Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East).”It further reads: “Pursuant to the custodial violence, the Applicant underwent a medical examination at Lady Hardinge Medical College Hospital. The MLC dated 24.07.2026 records soft tissue injuries to the neck, swelling, spinal tenderness, and redness over the neck.”However, no FIR has been registered till date on the basis of Gupta’s complaint.The application reads: “Despite the Applicant’s detailed written complaint dated 24.07.2026, disclosing the commission of cognizable offences, including wrongful confinement, voluntarily causing grievous hurt, and criminal intimidation by identifiable police personnel of Police Station Nizamuddin, till date no First Information Report has been registered, no reply has been received from the Respondents, and no action whatsoever has been taken against the erring officers. Likewise, no disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against them.”Gupta, through his counsel, urged the Supreme Court to issue an order or direction directing that the investigation into the incident dated July 23-24 be conducted by an independent agency or under the supervision of an independent authority or a retired judge of the Supreme Court.He also seeks the initiation of appropriate departmental and disciplinary action against the police personnel of Police Station Nizamuddin, including the Station House Officer.
