New Delhi: Tensions gripped Karnataka’s Shivamogga after a man was stabbed after communal clashes erupted over a poster of Hindutva icon V.D. Savarkar and 18th century Mysuru ruler Tipu Sultan in the district on Independence Day.According to news reports, the police have arrested all four accused over the stabbing incident.According to police, 20-year-old Prem Singh was stabbed after clashes broke out between the two communities in the town over putting up the banners. Singh, however, was not involved in the clashes, PTI reported, citing the police.Soon after the clashes, prohibitory orders under section 144 of the Indian Penal Code (joining an unlawful assembly armed with any deadly weapon) were imposed in the town.A case of attempt to murder was registered under section 307 of IPC against Nadeem, Tanveer, Charbi and Abdul Rehman, and they were arrested.“We have arrested four people. We will interrogate them to find out any background and ideological support to them, or their ideological leanings,” additional director general of police (law and order) Alok Kumar told the news agency.Meanwhile, Mohammed Zabi alias Charbi (30), who was suspected to be involved in the clashes, was shot in the leg when he allegedly tried to attack the policemen who went to detain him. He is recovering in a hospital after the incident on Tuesday, August 16.According to News18, Nadeem is said to have been involved in a 2016 riot case as well. Another man, identified as Jabiullah, is said to have attacked the police when they went to arrest him at around 3 am on Tuesday morning.Also read: Hindutva and the Question of Who Owns IndiaAs part of the 75th Independence Day celebrations, right-wing groups had tried to tie Savarkar’s flex to the high mast light pole at the Amir Ahmad Circle circle in Shivamogga, to which the other group objected and wanted to install Tipu Sultan’s flex there.Police sources told PTI that there was an attempt by some persons to replace or damage the flex, adding that this led to a tense situation in the area, as a large number of people from both sides had gathered there.The Bharatiya Janata Party and other Hindu groups staged a protest demanding that they be allowed to install Savarkar’s flex and action against the other group for insulting their icon.Police had to resort to a mild lathicharge to bring the situation under control.The officials have installed the national tricolour at the place where both groups wanted to install the flex.“Such incidents shouldn’t take place. Have instructed police to take strict action against those who commit such crime,” chief minister Basavaraj Bommai said.(With inputs from PTI)
