New Delhi: The Delhi high court on Friday, November 11, dismissed with a cost of Rs 1 lakh a public interest litigation (PIL) challenging the appointment of Justice D.Y. Chandrachud as the Chief Justice of India.A bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad observed that “the petition has been filed only to gain publicity without there being any material.”The court termed the petition as a “publicity interest litigation”, news agency Press Trust of India reported.The petitioner, Sanjeev Kumar Tiwari, who claimed to be the national president of an organisation named Gram Uday Foundation, alleged that Justice Chandrachud’s appointment as the CJI was against the constitution.Also read: Why the Supreme Court Collegium Will Have Six Members Until May 13, 2023He was sworn in as the 50th Chief Justice of India on November 9.According to the Indian Express, the plea urged for an inquiry by security agencies against CJI Chandrachud to find out if he has any “kind of relation with anti-nationals and Naxalite Christian terrorists”.Last week, the Supreme Court had dismissed a petition with a similar prayer, saying that it was “completely misconceived”.(With inputs from PTI)
