New Delhi: Former finance minister P. Chidambaram on Thursday moved the Supreme Court seeking bail in the INX Media corruption case.Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Chidambaram, mentioned the matter for urgent listing before a bench headed by Justice N.V. Ramana.The bench, also comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Krishna Murari, said that Chidambaram’s plea would be sent to Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi for taking a call on the listing of the matter.The Congress leader, who is currently lodged in jail in judicial custody, has moved the apex court challenging the Delhi high court’s September 30 verdict dismissing his bail plea in the case.The high court rejected his bail petition saying though the former finance ministerĀ is not a “flight risk” and there is no chance of tampering with evidence, he can influence witnesses if granted bail.Chidambaram was arrested from his Jor Bagh residence and is in Tihar Jail under judicial custody till October 3.Following his arrest, Chidambaram did not approach the trial court and had directly filed the regular bail plea in the high court.The CBI had registered an FIR on May 15, 2017, alleging irregularities in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance granted to the INX Media group for receiving overseas funds of Rs 305 crore in 2007 during Chidambaram’s tenure as the finance minister.Thereafter, the ED lodged a money laundering case in this regard in 2017.According to sealed documents filed by the CBI in court, the investigation has found that INX Media’s former promoters Indrani and Peter Mukherjea had met Chidambaram even before they filed an application before the FIPB Unit.(With PTI inputs)
