New Delhi: A Delhi court today acquitted former Bharatiya Janata Party MP and the Wrestling Federation of India former head against whom the country’s top wrestlers held a weeks-long protest in New Delhi, Brij Bhushan Singh, in the case alleging that he had sexually harassed at least five women wrestlers.LiveLaw has reported that Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Ashwini Panwar of the Rouse Avenue Courts passed the order today, August 3. Singh was already out on bail in the case. His co-accused in these cases is Vinod Tomar, the former assistant secretary of the Wrestling Federation of India.The proceedings took place in-camera – outside the view of the public.Senior Advocate Rebecca John appeared for the women wrestlers. Singh was represented by Advocate Rajiv Mohan.Singh was accused of sexual harassment by women wrestlers during his time as the chief of the Wrestling Federation of India. Women wrestlers had made serious complaints against Singh, including that he demanded sexual favours in lieu of professional assistance, molested them, ran his hands over their breasts and intimidated anyone who tried to complain. Top male and female wrestlers of the country – headed by wrestling champions Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, among others – held a sit-in protest against him in New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, highlighting the Union government and police’s failure to act, including giving up their international and national awards. The police had cracked down on the protest.Phogat has expressed disappointment but has added that she and the others are keen to appeal the decision.The Delhi Police had registered two FIRs at the Connaught Place police station against Singh on June 15, 2023. One was registered under various offences under the Indian Penal Code. The second FIR filed by a minor wrestler was registered under the POCSO Act. The minor had later withdrawn her allegations against Singh.In 2023, the Delhi Police had told the Rouse Avenue Court that there was enough evidence against Singh for him to be put on trial in the sexual harassment case filed by the women wrestlers.Olympic medalist Sakshi Malik, who was one of the wrestlers protesting against Singh, quit the sport in December after one of Singh’s aides was picked to head the WFI. The Wire has reported that he was seen sitting in the Lok Sabha among BJP MPs only a few rows behind Union ministers Nitin Gadkari and Amit Shah as the latter gave his speech on the Women’s Reservation Bill and pledged his government’s support towards women empowerment.While Singh lost his seat from Kaiserganj, the Bharatiya Janata Party has chosen to keep it in the family – his son Karan Bhushan Singh is the MP from there.Singh has remained vocal. Last year, he came out in support of Unnao rape convict and former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar after a recent Delhi high court judgement suspended Sengar’s jail term.
