New Delhi: The Bombay high court has temporarily stayed the ‘Leave India Notice’ issued against actor Imran Khan by the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) till November 2, when the next hearing in the case is scheduled.A division bench led by chief Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi, on Tuesday (October 27), while granting interim relief to Khan, also recorded an oral statement from the additional solicitor general Anil C. Singh that the notice would be kept in abeyance till Monday. The ruling permits him to stay in India beyond October 28, the initial deadline specified in the notice.Khan, who is a a US citizen and Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholder, had approached the high court to challenge the leave notice issued to him after allegedly participating in a protest demanding the resignation of chief election commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls at August Kranti Maidan on October 10.The FRRO had flagged his alleged participation in the protest as a violation of immigration and visa rules. In his petition, Khan argued that there was no evidence that he had participated in the protest or mobilised a crowd, calling the leave notice unconstitutional and arbitrary. In an Instagram post on October 12, Lekha Washington, Khan’s partner, had claimed that the two had been walking towards the protest site to inquire about a friend who had been detained by the police when they were suddenly surrounded by media representatives.“He [Imran] responded to the questions of the media, saying we have no demands, we are not part of an organisation,” she said.
