New Delhi: A local court in Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday (October 18) convicted Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan, his wife Tazeen Fatima, and son Abdullah Azam in connection with the case related to alleged forgery of Abdullah’s birth certificate.The court awarded them the maximum punishment, a seven-year jail term, in this case.According to the Indian Express, in the past one month, this is the fourth case in which Azam Khan has been convicted. This is also the second conviction of former MLA Abdullah Azam Khan.Arun Parkash Saxena, a former district government counsel, who was representing the prosecution, told PTI, “After the court verdict, the trio was taken into judicial custody and will be sent to the jail from the court itself.”The first information register (FIR) in the case was lodged by a resident, Akash Saxena (who is now a Bharatiya Janata Party MLA), at the Ganj police station in Rampur, on January 3, 2019. He had alleged that Khan and his wife helped their son obtain two fake date of birth certificates – one from Lucknow and another from Rampur.According to the charge-sheet, in the certificate issued by the Rampur municipality, Abdullah Azam’s date of birth was mentioned as January 1, 1993. The other certificate said he was born in Lucknow on September 30, 1990.Abdullah is accused of using the first one for his passport and for travels abroad, while the second one was used for government records and for getting affiliation with Jauhar University, IE reported.They were convicted under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 467 (forgery of valuable security, will, etc.), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 471 (using as genuine a forged 1[document or electronic record]) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy).On February 26, 2020, Azam Khan, his wife and son had surrendered before a local court in Rampur, over their connection with the case. Later, all three obtained bail.Since the BJP assumed power in Uttar Pradesh in 2017, Azam Khan has faced 81 cases filed against him in Rampur on multiple charges, such as land-grabbing, cheating, and criminal trespass. Additionally, Azam Khan’s wife, Tanzeen Fatima, and his son, Abdullah Azam, have been implicated in some of these cases.In July, a Rampur court sentenced Azam Khan to two years in prison in a hate speech case during the 2019 Lok Sabha election election. Subsequently, the court granted him bail.
