New Delhi: As the Rajasthan high court on May 7 granted News18 TV anchor Aman Chopra interim protection from arrest in two out of the three cases registered against him for allegedly “outraging religious sentiments”, on May 8, a team of Rajasthan Police reached Noida to arrest Chopra in the third case.During his show “Desh Jhukne Nahi Denge” on April 22, Chopra had said, “It is such a big coincidence that two days after a bulldozer was used to demolish the gate of a mosque in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri, three temples were demolished in the Alwar district of Rajasthan. One of the temples is 300 years old. Is this a mere coincidence or are these events interconnected? Is this revenge for Jahangirpuri?” It was also claimed that the temples were being razed in Alwar under the Congress government’s watch.Alt News debunked this claim and the chronology in its report ‘News18 Falsely Claims Temple Razed in Alwar as “Revenge” for Jahangirpuri Demolition Drive’.On April 23, three FIRs were registered against him in Bundi, Alwar and Dungarpur districts of Rajasthan, under various sections pertaining to sedition, outraging religious sentiments and promoting enmity between two groups and under the IT Act.Later, Chopra had filed a petition in the Rajasthan high court seeking quashing of the FIRs.According to LiveLaw, Justice Birendra Kumar observed, “Since the subsequent FIRs for same cause of action and their investigation are itself not sustainable/permissible, in view of the judgments of the Supreme Court (supra), there is no question that petitioner need not get protection from being arrested in these cases.”“As such, the petitioner shall not be arrested in FIR No. 372/2022, registered with Police Station Kotwali, Alwar and FIR No. 200/2022 registered with Police Station Sadar, Bundi, till further order.”However, Chopra is still facing an arrest warrant following a local court order in Dungarpur district. Also read: Prime Time Diverts and Distracts to Shield Government From Negative SentimentAccording to Dungarpur Kotwali police station, a man lodged an FIR against Chopra alleging that the journalist gave “false and fictitious details” by showing that the demolition of a temple in Rajgarh of Alwar district was done by the Rajasthan government as an “act of revenge” following the demolition drive in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri. The Rajasthan Police told the Indian Express that their team went to the house of Chopra in Noida on Saturday but he was not there. The cops also said that the Uttar Pradesh Police didn’t cooperate with them.“Our team is camping in Noida and searching all possible locations to trace him. Yesterday [May 7], also our team went to Chopra’s house but he was not found there and his residence was locked,” Dungarpur superintendent of police Sudhir Joshi told PTI.(With inputs from PTI)
