New Delhi: Close to 2,500 workers of the Uttarakhand Roadways Workers’ Union wore black arm bands to work on Monday (October 28), protesting against the fact that their salaries have not been paid for the last two months.“We haven’t been paid our salaries for the months of September and October, therefore, we have decided to wear black armbands in protest. We won’t go on a strike but continue our work wearing black armbands,” union president Kamal Papnay told the Times of India.According to the protestors, none of the nearly 7,000 roadways workers have been paid in the last two months. This is despite the fact that the Nainital high court had pulled up the state government earlier this month about salaries not being paid. Also read | Delhi Minimum Wage Hike: Traders’ Body Demands Roll Back, Unions Lukewarm“The high court orders clearly stated that the dues must be cleared before Diwali but that didn’t happen. We might approach the court once again. The workers had received their salaries for the month of July and August only after the high court’s intervention,” Papnay said. The Uttarakhand Transport Corporation is claiming that a number of workers have been paid for the month of September and only some workers’ dues are pending.“The government has itself admitted in the court that it still owes Rs 68 crore to the workers. How are the drivers or other workers expected to run their houses when they are not getting their salaries, which are their only source of income,” the union’s advocate had told the court.
