New Delhi: Over 100 suspected cases of typhoid have been reported in Gujarat’s Gandhinagar due to contamination of drinking water in Sector 24 and 28 and Adiwada areas of the city.Leaks in at least seven locations have resulted in sewage mixing with drinking water supply, the Times of India reported. This comes in the wake of Rs 257-crore investment in a 24/7 water supply project, as part of which, new water pipelines were laid close to sewer lines, the report said.Union home minister Amit Shah, who is also the Lok Sabha MP from Gandhinagar, directed the immediate repair of leakages and intensified inspection of the water network in surrounding areas.Of the 113 cases, 19 have been discharged after treatment while the rest are being treated at the Gandhinagar Civil Hospital and health centres in Sectors 24 and 29. A 24X7 OPD has also been set up in the affected areas.Inspections in Sector 24, 26, 28 and Adiwada have been conducted by 75 health teams, covering 20,800 households and a population of over 90,000, the Indian Express reported.According to an official release quoted by the paper, super-chlorination of water has been expedited. “We are hopeful of containing the outbreak in a day or two with super-chlorination,” Municipal commissioner J.N. Vaghela said.Meanwhile, 30,000 chlorine tablets and 20,600 ORS packets have been distributed as a preemptive measure. The government has advised people to only drink boiled water and eat home cooked food. The outbreak in Gujarat comes days after similar contamination was reported in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore, where 10 people lost their lives after drinking contaminated water. At present, 142 persons are hospitalised with 11 in intensive-care units (ICUs).
