New Delhi: The Varanasi Police on January 9, Sunday, registered a first information report (FIR) at Bhelupur police station against five people for allegedly putting up posters at various ghats warning non-Hindus to keep away, according to an Indian Express report. However, no arrests have been made so far.Last week, alleged members of the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal had pasted posters around the ghats of Varanasi that read, “Non-Hindus are prohibited from visiting the Ganga’s bank in Varanasi.” Photos and videos of them putting up these posters were also shared on social media.Of the five men, two belonged to the VHP and Bajrang Dal, as they were seen acknowledging their role in the videos.Posters being stuck. Calling the ghats and the temples of Kashi symbols of the Hindu religion and culture, Gupta said others should stay away. He added that if visitors to these places have faith in Hinduism, they are welcome, and if not, “we will send them away from our sacred places”.Bajrang Dal’s Varanasi coordinator, Nikhil Tripathi ‘Rudra’ said, “River Ganga is our mother, it is not a picnic spot. Those who consider the Ganga a picnic spot should stay away from it. If they do not, Bajrang Dal will make sure they do.”The VHP on Sunday said the two had been removed from the organisations, IE reported.Assistant commissioner of police (Bhelupur) Praveen Kumar Singh on Sunday told the daily that investigators were trying to ascertain the identities of the others involved. Bhelupur station house officer Rama Kant Dubey said the police has served notices to Gupta and Tripathi and ordered them to deposit personal bonds of Rs 5 lakh each to ensure peace is maintained.Also read: To Counter BJP’s Politicised History, India Must Promote Historical MulticulturalismVHP’s Kashi (Varanasi) Prant Mantri, Anand Singh, told the newspaper that Gupta and Tripathi have been removed from the organisations and relieved from all their responsibilities.Raghvendra Chaubey, a local Congress leader, had told The Wire that his party informed the police about the “mischievous acts” of the right-wingers. “I telephoned the DCP of Varuna Zone to inform him about the hate campaign that has been started in the town by saffron-clad youth,” Chaubey said.Senior journalist Vijay Vineet told The Wire over the phone that the Ganga and its ghats have never belonged to followers of one religion, and spoke about how Ustad Bismillah Khan used to offer namaz after bathing in the Ganga. He expressed his concern over the incident saying, “How can anyone divide Varanasi in the name of religion, to take political advantage?”Varanasi is the parliamentary constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.The incident comes ahead of the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh which are scheduled to take place in seven phases from February 10 to March 7.
