Agartala: Tripura’s most senior leader and revenue minister Narendra Chandra Debbarma Wednesday criticised the state government saying that “democracy in the state is in danger” and “there is no rule of law”.Debbarma made these statements after he was allegedly attacked by supporters of the Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance (TIPRA) at the Jampuijala-Takarjala constituency in Sepahijala district.Debbarma, who is an MLA of Jampuijala-Takarjala constituency and also the chief of Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), went to his constituency Wednesday to hold a meeting to review developmental works and the COVID-19 situation.Shortly after the meeting began, 50-60 TIPRA supporters began their protest waving black flags and chanted ‘go back’, the minister said.Upon receiving the news, a large police force rushed to the spot. However, in the presence of the police, protesters pelted bricks and stones at the community hall where the meeting was taking place.Police officials were able to safely rescue Debbarma from the crowd.“As per the pre-scheduled meeting, I went to visit my constituency to talk about developmental works and to create awareness on COVID-19. Accordingly, I reached the spot at 11:45 am and started our meeting. Meanwhile, unruly youths belonging to TIPRA reached the spot and started attacking us. The police, however, reached the spot and thwarted the crowd. But we had to cancel the meeting and left the place with the help of the police. It is my duty to work for my constituency, but as per them, I can’t hold any meetings and can’t work for my people,” Debbarma said. Also read: Tripura: A Year After Agreement, Process of Permanently Resettling Bru People BeginsThe Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and IPFT came into an alliance and formed the government in 2018 after ending a 25-year Left rule in Tripura.“A total anarchy is prevailing in the state. I have never seen such incidents in my life in such a democratic state. There is no rule of law, and democracy is in danger. I would like to request the home department of the state to take immediate steps or else the situation would turn worse,” the chief of IPFT said.He said the protesters made it clear that no elected member can visit their constituency and work for their people. When asked whether he has informed the matter to the chief minister, he said, “I don’t feel like personally telling about this incident to the chief minister. As the administration was there, the police were there, they know everything. They came to attack me and chanted ‘go back’. I have seen many elections, but I have never seen before the way violence occurred across the state after the Tripura district council poll,” he added.TIPRA – which is led by the royal scion Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma – and its ally Indigenous Peoples Front of Twipra (INPT) swept the Tripura Tribal Area Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) election held recently and formed the council bagging 18 seats out of 28. However, IPFT failed to win even a single seat in the election. In the district council polls, Pradyot had contested from the Jampuijala-Takarjala constituency against N.C. Debbarma and won the election.Meanwhile, on Thursday afternoon, chairman of TIPRA Pradyot Kishore, said, “After I heard about the incident, I immediately informed my leaders and directed them to find it out. I don’t feel good that we (TIPRASA) are attacking our own senior people. I will not tolerate it. I have directed [the leaders] to find the persons who were engaged in the incident and I will suspend them from the party immediately. I directed [them] to submit the report by this evening.”
