New Delhi: As the new West Bengal government under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) moves to push back alleged “illegal” immigrants to Bangladesh under its “detect, delete, deport” policy, tensions prevailed in the state’s Malda district on Saturday (June 20). The incident took place on the Sukdevpur outpost in Baishnabnagar, located in an unfenced area of the border, The Indian Express reported after 20 alleged Bangladeshis who were pushed back recently allegedly attempted to re-enter Indian territory.Pijush Mandal, a resident of Sukdebpur, told The Telegraph newspaper that 20 Bangladeshis who had been pushed back from India recently had attempted to re-enter.“The BSF (Border Security Force) immediately went on high alert and foiled the intrusion attempt. We also gathered there in support of the BSF. Sensing the alertness of the force and the mood of the Indian citizens, the intruders retreated,” Mandal was quoted as saying to the newspaper.Mandal also alleged that the group later along with 1,000 others gathered on the Bangladeshi side of the border for a few hours and then dispersed as the BSF stood on the Indian side.“There was tension but we dealt with the situation adequately,” a senior BSF officer was quoted as saying to The Indian Express.Earlier this month, the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) placed a series of armed village defence volunteers at more than a dozen spots across the international border in West Bengal and Tripura, amid an ongoing crackdown by the BJP governments on undocumented individuals suspected as illegal immigrants, Border Security Force (BSF) personnel on the ground were reported as saying by Hindustan Times. The BJP government in West Bengal under chief minister Suvendu Adhikari has said that it will intensify the identification of alleged infiltrators and hand them over directly to the BSF and not to courts. Adhikari in announcing the “delete, detect and deport” policy first announced by Union home minister Amit Shah in parliament in December while defending the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls, has claimed that 4,800 “illegal infiltrators” had been deported to Bangladesh over the past one month. Adhikari has also said last month that over 140 acres of land has been handed over to the BSF for fencing.“Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said that national security is our priority. The state government has started identifying infiltrators and pushing them back. However some elements in Bangladesh are trying to prevent this. This is what happened at the Sukdevpur border outpost today… But we are determined,” Khagen Murmu, BJP Lok Sabha MP from Maldaha Uttar, told the Indian Express. The attempts to push people into Bangladesh has been objected to by the country, which has refused to accept people sent without proper channels.
