New Delhi: Manipur police has arrested a sixth person in the case where three women were paraded naked and sexually assaulted in Thoubal district on May 4. All six arrests have taken place since the video showing two of the women being led by a mob of men went viral on July 19, and sparked nationwide outrage.PTI has reported that the sixth person arrested in connection with the crime is a juvenile. The first four arrests were all made on July 20. Chief minister N. Biren Singh, facing intense criticism for his handling of the incident and the nearly three-month-long ethnic violence in the state, had tweeted the news of the first arrest, saying, “After taking a Suo-moto cognisance of the incident immediately after the video surfaced, the Manipur Police swung to action and made the first arrest this morning (sic).”This tweet had garnered further criticism as many pointed out how action taken months after the incident and days after an FIR was filed could be considered “suo motu” or “swift.”On July 21, one of the accused’s houses was reportedly set on fire by a group of women from his village. The fifth arrest was made yesterday, July 22. This man is a 19-year-old, PTI has reported.
