New Delhi: Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh walked out of the Sunaria jail in Haryana on Monday (January 5), after being granted a 40-day parole. This is the 15th time that Singh, who is presently serving a 20-year jail term for raping two of his disciples has been released on parole since his conviction in 2017, reported Hindustan Times.According to Dera spokesperson and advocate Jitender Khurana, Singh will stay at his Sirsa-headquartered Dera for the duration of the parole period. In 2025, Singh was granted parole thrice – a 30-day parole in January 2025, ahead of the February 5 Delhi assembly polls, a 21-day furlough in April 2025 and thereafter a 20-day parole on October 1, 2024, days before the October 5 Haryana assembly polls, reported Hindustan Times. The latest parole would take the number of days that spent outside prison to 405 days in just over eight years, since Singh was convicted, reported Times of India.Opposition leaders questioned the parole granted to Singh, while highlighting the fact that the Supreme Court on Monday rejected the bail application of activist Umar Khalid who is in prolonged incarceration with the trial yet to begin.“No bail to Umar Khalid – detained for over 5 years under the draconian UAPA, with the trial yet to even begin. Pre-trial jail is not a punishment!! The principle that “bail is the rule, jail the exception” clearly doesn’t apply when it comes to certain individuals. Meanwhile, convicted rapist and murderer Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh (sentenced in 2017) has just been granted yet another 40-day parole – his 15th temporary release from prison since conviction. One languishes indefinitely without trial. The other enjoys repeated “jail vacations” on demand,” Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) MP John Brittas posted on X on Monday.
