New Delhi: Around 4,000 police personnel including companies of central forces and other paramilitary forces have been deployed in Delhi ahead of protests by several outfits which are set to take place on Friday (October 2) at Jantar Mantar to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over irregularities in the Election Commission’s (EC’s) Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, reported Hindustan Times.“District forces, reserved forces, Rapid Action Force and other paramilitary forces have been called,” an official told the newspaper, adding that 20 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) will also be deployed for security.The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said on Friday that eleven metro stations in the national capital will remain closed till further notice. The Metro stations which will be closed include Janpath, Patel Chowk, Central Secretariat, Rajiv Chowk, Seva Teerth, Mandi House, Lok Kalyan Marg, INA, Chawri Bazar, Ramakrishna Ashram Marg and New Delhi.Service UpdateThe entry and exit at the following metro stations will remain closed till further notice. Last month, while hearing a plea over the closure of 17 Delhi metro stations during the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-led student protests in the national capital in July, the Supreme Court had issued notice to the Union government.The Delhi police had earlier said on Thursday (October 1) that no permission has been granted to any organisation for protests against the Election Commission (EC) at Jantar Mantar this week.The protests are set to begin at 11am. The All India Students’ Association (AISA) has said that it will to stage a protest at Jantar Mantar. On September 28, an AISA delegation, led by its president Neha Bora, had submitted an intimation letter at the Parliament Street police station about a proposed protest at 11am on Friday.The police have said that the Indian Youth Congress, has also sought permission for a fresh one at Jantar Mantar but was denied permission.The HT report added citing senior Delhi police officials that the police are expecting a “high number” of protesters at Jantar Mantar.The authorities have also approached the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) for deployment of “extra force”.Delhi Police and paramilitary forces have put multi-layer barricades from Tolstoy Marg, Janpath Road, Sansad Marg till Jantar Mantar, with the entire protest site being blocked with barricades from both sides – Tolstoy Marg and Kerala Bhawan side. Barricading has also been done near Ashoka Road.
