New Delhi: The Election Commission of India has announced that elections for 56 Rajya Sabha seats that will be vacant due to retirements in April 2024 will be held February 27 this year.The 56 seats represent 15 different states: Uttar Pradesh (10 seats), Maharashtra (6), Bihar (6), West Bengal (5), Madhya Pradesh (5), Gujarat (4), Karnataka (4), Andhra Pradesh (3), Telangana (3), Rajasthan (3), Odisha (3), Uttarakhand (1), Chhattisgarh (1), Haryana (1), and Himachal Pradesh (1).Rajya Sabha members serve a six-year term and one-third of the members retire every two years to ensure continuity.Rajya Sabha members are election indirectly, by members of state legislative assemblies, through a proportional representation system.
