New Delhi: The sale of meat, fish and now even eggs has been banned in part of Madhya Pradesh in light of the nine-day Navratri festival, district authorities have announced.“Maihar is a religious city and Navratri begins at this time, so the administration is banning the sale of meat, fish and eggs from September 22 to October 2,” said SDM Divya Patel. The nine-day ban is also in place in Bhopal. While some cited the ‘forced’ food ban as an example of state overreach, others have called for even more rigorous bans extending to onion, garlic, alcohol and condoms, the Deccan Herald reported.“Sale of Eggs banned in Bhopal, MP from Sep 22 to Oct 2 for Navratri, along with Fish & Meat. Started with Beef, now reached to Eggs. What next? Locking up Non-Veg eaters,” a social media user was quoted as saying by the paper“Good we [should] respect everyone’s religious beliefs. But [please] ban alcohol and pork also,” another wrote.CPI(M) MP Amra Ram spoke to media agency IANS and said, “Meat is consumed in large quantities across the country; more than 50% of the population consumes it. What anyone eats or wears is a matter of personal choice. The Indian Constitution guarantees everyone the freedom to decide for themselves. Who will follow which religion, or what practices they observe—that is entirely up to them…”A similar ban had been put in place in the state in March, with authorities warning shop owners of license cancellation if they flout the orders.
