Lok Sabha MP C. Lalrosanga whose party, the Mizo National Front, is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance and who voted against the Narendra Modi government in yesterday’s no-confidence motion, says that the entire northeast and, particularly, its tribal communities feel “let down” by PM Modi. Lalrosanga said that Modi should have spoken about the crisis in Manipur at the very start of his speech and before raising any other issues. Instead, he only spoke about Manipur after 90 minutes and that too, according to The Telegraph, for five minutes in the first instance and 30 seconds in the second. In a 25-minute interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire, C. Lalrosanga made clear that his party, the Mizo National Front, expected more and better from Modi.He said that for almost 100 days he has been trying to meet Union home minister Amit Shah to discuss Manipur but has not been given an appointment. Lalrosanga also said that questions are being asked in his party about how long it will remain a member of the NDA. He said that these questions would be answered by November when Mizoram goes to polls.Lalrosanga said Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh must be sacked and he cannot understand why that step has not been taken. He accused the Modi government of supporting Biren despite the fact the entire Kuki community has lost trust in him and view him as “anti-Kuki.”The MP said Biren Singh’s retention is creating an obstacle to peace.Lalrosanga also strongly disputed the claim made by home minister Shah on Thursday, that a large influx of Kuki refugees from Myanmar, who have allegedly settled in the forests of Manipur and aroused fears of demographic change, are one of the key causes of the problem. The MNF MP said the Rajya Sabha Chairman’s decision to switch off his Rajya Sabha colleague K. Vanlalvena’s microphone and to expunge his speech because he criticised the home minister’s claim that the tribal people in Manipur are Myanmarese is “undemocratic”.He sharply criticised and disagreed with the United Naga Council’s call for an NRC exercise in Manipur to identify illegal immigrants from Myanmar. Lalrosanga said that in his and his party’s eyes the Kukis are overwhelmingly the victims of the crisis not Meiteis and he believes the Meiteis are by and large the perpetrators.Lalrosanga made clear that he only voted against the government on the specific issue of Manipur and not on any other issue. He said the MNF remains a part of the NDA but they are already asking themselves questions about how long this will continue. He said that a final decision will be taken before Mizoram goes to the polls in November.Watch the fill interview here.
