New Delhi: On January 2, Madhya Pradesh chief minister Mohan Yadav suspended Rohit Sisonia, who served as additional commissioner (water supply) in the Indore Municipal Corporation, and other officials for negligence after contaminated water lead to the death of over 30 people in Indore’s Bhagirathpura area. The vomiting and diarrhoea outbreak in Bhagirathpura surfaced on December 29 last year, causing the deaths while more than 400 patients were admitted to hospitals.A probe report dated August 18, submitted by a one-member judicial panel of retired high court judge Justice Sushil Kumar Gupta in the Indore bench of the Madhya Pradesh high court in September held the 2017-batch IAS officer Sisonia and the then-executive engineer (water supply) Sanjeev Shrivastava “primarily responsible” for “various lapses in inspections, carrying out repair works, and several delays in projects to replace the water pipeline which further led to the tragedy,” The Hindu reported. According to the report, the primary reason for the bacterial contamination was mixing of sewage water with drinking water due to parallel laying of two pipelines that had been damaged over the years. The report highlighted a 72-day delay in the tender process to replace the damaged water pipeline. The delay took place between October 15 and December 26, 2025, just days before the tragedy struck. It, however, linked only 22 deaths to the tragedy, citing hospital records. On October 13, nine months after his suspension, Sisonia was transferred as the deputy collector (DC) of Raisen from his earlier position of deputy secretary in the Farmers Welfare and Agriculture Development Department. Sisonia took charge as the DC on Thursday (October 15).The Congress party has slammed the Madhya Pradesh government for appointing Sisonia as Raisen DC.“36 people died in the tragedy of contaminated water in Bhagirathpura, Indore, India’s first Water Plus City! After this criminal incident, the administrative officer Rohit Sisodiya, who was removed, has been made the Raisen collector by the Mohan Yadav government,” Congress state unit chief Jitu Patwari wrote on X.He added: “The victim families of Bhagirathpura are still awaiting justice and action against the culprits today. The BJP government should first explain what action has been taken on the inquiry commission’s report and what facts were considered before appointing the concerned officer as collector?”Questioning the transparency of postings in the state, Patwari further said: “Has the transfer industry now turned into a transfer factory? Instead of accountability, favouritism is being prioritised in important postings! Allegations of corruption/commission are also coming to light as evidence! Chief Minister Ji, Give justice to the victims of Bhagirathpura! Make the inquiry report public! Fix responsibility!”
