New Delhi: While the Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed the chief electoral officer (CEO) of every state to publish on their websites the lists of persons who got notices for the being “unmapped” or “logical discrepancies” during the third phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, the CEO of Maharashtra has not yet published the list of 1.22 crore such voters in the state, reported The Hindu. The ECI had earlier issued a notification in this regard wherein the CEOs of all concerned states were asked to publish the list in their websites.“The process of publication is on at their level,” an official told The Hindu. The newspaper cited sources in the CEO’s office who said that the list is to be published by the EROs (Electoral Registration Officers). At present there are 59.75 lakh unmapped people in Maharashtra while 62.48 lakh people have been flagged for logical discrepancies in the state, taking their collective figure to a massive 1.22 crore voters. Other states and Union Territories such as Karnataka, Telangana and Delhi have already published their lists,” reported The Hindu. On Thursday (October 15), the Maharashtra CEO said that special camps will be held in the State on October 17, 18, 24, and 25, for the inclusion of new or excluded electors.Earlier on Thursday, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against SIR in the state was heard in the Supreme Court.“Of the 9.8 crore voters, 2 crore have been just knocked off in Maharashtra. 1.22 crore have been issued notices for logical discrepancy or for being unmapped. If such large numbers are getting affected, there is something seriously wrong in your process. What is a logical discrepancy? What is the basis of it? What are the grounds? Once I get an Aadhar card, the inquiry should stop there,” senior advocate Arvind Datar told The Hindu about the petition. For our full coverage on the SIR and the issues it has brought to citizens, click here.
