New Delhi: Kuki organisations in Moreh, a border town in Manipur, have asked residents to deny land for construction or fencing the border with Myanmar. At least six Kuki organisations at Moreh on Monday (April 14) evening said that the fence would become a barrier and would threaten the way of life and culture of the communities. They also rejected the narrative describing the Kuki communities as illegal migrants, reported Deccan Herald. The town of Moreh, which is a centre for trade, is situated in the Tengnoupal district and has a high concentration of Kuki population. A large number of people from the Meitei community has fled the valley during the ongoing conflict in Manipur between the two communities. The appeal by Kuki organisations could upset the Union government’s plans to fence the border with Myanmar.Earlier, the Union government had approved over Rs. 30,000 crore to fence the border along Myanmar which has a length of 1,643 kilometres. While Meiteis had welcomed the decision, other ethnic groups including the Kukis, Mizos and Nagas had started an agitation against the decision. They had said that fencing the border would divide their communities living on either side of the border. The northeastern state of Nagaland has also seen protests over the issue of border fencing. At the forefront of the protests in Nagaland is the Naga Students Federation (NSF). In an earlier report, K Tep, former president of Kohima-based NSF, categorically had told The Wire, “Naga civil societies and every Naga will continue to object to border fencing and scrapping of FMR in the Naga areas.”Tep had argued that this move by New Delhi would come in the way of settling the Naga issue. “Every Naga village is divided as per their customs and traditions. And yet, without consulting them, an international boundary was settled. In spite of that border, Nagas still consider themselves as one people. Naga people will, therefore, not accept anything which will further divide the Nagas and their traditional land,” he said.
