New Delhi: Congress MP K.C. Venugopal moved a privilege motion against Union minister Jitendra Singh on Friday (July 31) for “deliberately misleading parliaments” with his remarks in the Lok Sabha when he said that during the July 20 protests, “no shots were fired at protesters” and, therefore, there is no question of issuing any such orders.Venugopal in his notice has said that Singh’s statement in the House stands in “contradiction to the facts on the ground.”“Contrary to the Honourable minister’s assertions, firing did occur, and the injured person is still under medication, with data available in the public domain. By falsely claiming on the floor of the House that no firing took place, the Minister has knowingly and deliberately provided incorrect information to parliament and misled the House,” the notice said.The privilege notice by Venugopal refers to the MoS PMO’s remarks in the Lok Sabha on July 29 when he was delivering his reply to the discussion on the Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026. His remarks came shortly after leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi, during the discussion on the bill, accused Union home minister Amit Shah of ordering students to be shot at. “Secondly, it has been clarified repeatedly that no firing took place; only tear gas was used. Jab goli chali hi nai, toh aadhesh dene ka sawal paida hi nahi hota. (Since no firing took place, the question of issuing an order does not arise). And the authority to give such an order rests with the magistrate, not the minister,” Singh had said.Venugopal said in his notice that “ a minister is expected to verify facts before placing them on record in the supreme legislative body of the country” and therefore privilege proceedings must be initiated against him.The Wire has also reported that Singh has said in the House, that “utmost restraint was exercised” while responding to the Congress’s deputy leader in the house, Gaurav Gogoi, who had said in his statement on July 28 that innocent youth were attacked.“Maybe he does not know that utmost restraint was exercised. It was made sure that casualties don’t happen. From 1979 to 1984, AASU demonstrated in Assam and records show 860 innocent people, most of them innocent students, were killed under the Congress [governments]. He must have thought how they attacked innocent students, we also did so,” Singh had said.In a statement on X Venugopal said that leader of opposition Gandhi had met a pellet gun victim in front of the media and said there are countless media reports documenting victims of such firing, and hospital records have also emerged of victims suffering from injuries from such firings.“The Government cannot get away with such obvious falsehoods in Parliament.
