New Delhi: Indian Police Services officer Anurag Sujania, who had been investigating the hooch tragedy in Madhya Pradesh’s sagar district, submitted his resignation earlier this week on Monday, November 2.Four days prior, the officer had been transferred by the state government from Sagar to the police headquarters in Bhopal as an assistant inspector general (AIG). The transfer order, issued on October 27, was reportedly a part of a reshuffling of collectors and superintendents of police (SPs) of Sagar and Dewas districts.Sources in the police informed the Times of India that Sujania had not been onboard with the sudden transfer, contributing to his decision to leave. On September 6 and 7, 16 people lost their lives, with more than 40 hospitalised, after consuming spurious liquor linked to an alleged illicit liquor manufacturing and distribution network. The incident triggered massive public outrage, with a mob led by women vandalising a liquor shop in Madhya Pradesh’s Tikamgarh district and demanding accountability over the deaths. As an active officer on the case, Sujaniya had mentioned a “strong possibility” of the same trail being responsible for both the Sagar tragedy and an earlier illicit liquor case in Lalitpur.Congress party’s Jitu Patwari, a former minister in the Madhya Pradesh government, had also alleged that the death toll in the incident is higher than the government was letting on. Unofficial sources have estimated the death toll at 36, said TOI.
